What happens if a discount lowers the order below the gift threshold?

Free gifts are awarded based on cart value, while Shopify applies discount codes at checkout. If a customer enters a code that drops the total below your gift threshold, apps can’t adjust the cart during checkout, so the gift might remain temporarily.

How Gift Box resolves it automatically

  • After the order is created, Gift Box runs a post‑purchase validation.

  • The app checks whether the final order met the gift conditions.

  • If not, Gift Box edits the order and removes the gift.

Prevent it in advance (alternative method)

Use the “Compatibility with discounts coupons only” gifting method. This hides the discount field at checkout and adds it to the Gift Box pop‑up instead. Enable:

  • Include the discount code field on the Gift Box pop‑up

  • Adjust current spend when the discount is entered

Customers enter their code in the pop‑up, Gift Box recalculates the spend with the discount applied, and gifts are added or removed accordingly.
