A Partner API token gives PartnerJam the access it needs to read install, uninstall, and subscription events from your Shopify Partner account — the raw data that makes referral attribution possible. Together with your Partner ID and App ID, it's the third credential you'll need when pairing an app with PartnerJam.
This article walks through creating a new token. The same steps apply if you need to rotate or replace an existing one.
How to create a token
1. Log in to your Shopify Partner account.
2. Go to Settings and scroll down to the Partner API clients section. Click on Manage Partner API clients.
3. Click Create API client.
4. Name the client and grant two permissions: Manage apps and View financials.
These two are all PartnerJam needs. Don't enable any others — the fewer permissions, the safer the token.
5. Click Save to generate the token.
6. Copy the token and paste it into PartnerJam.
Changing or rotating an existing token
If you want to replace a token — after a team change, a suspected leak, or just as routine hygiene — create a new token following the steps above, paste it into PartnerJam, then delete the old client in your Partner dashboard.
PartnerJam will seamlessly start using the new token as soon as it's saved. There's no downtime in attribution, and no historical data is lost.
What we use it for
PartnerJam uses the token only to read the events needed for attribution: installs, uninstalls, and subscription charges for the apps you've paired with us.
We make just three API calls — one to validate the token on pairing, one to fetch the app's name, and one to fetch subscription events on an hourly basis. Nothing else.
For the full list of API calls and the specific queries we run, see Your app's privacy on PartnerJam.
A Shopify limitation worth knowing: Partner API tokens can't be scoped to a single app. The token technically grants access to every app in your Partner organization, but PartnerJam only reads data for the specific apps you've paired with us — that's what the App ID is for.
