What is the AI mode and how to use it

Everything about our most advanced and fully auto-pilot upselling feature.

AI mode is something we are really proud of as we are the first upsell app on the Shopify platform which does something like that.

Basically, it's a fully automated upsell system that will allow you to enable relevant upsells for all products in your store.

How? It's getting the most relevant product from the Shopify Product Recommendations API. Shopify’s AI algorithm uses the store’s data to provide smarter recommendations based on product descriptions and customer behavior.

Specifically, Candy Rack pulls the Complementary products that you can even define yourself in the Shopify Search & Discovery app. If there are no Complementary products to recommend, Candy Rack pulls Related products and uses them for the offers.

To enable AI mode, simply follow the steps below:


➡️ Step 1 – Start configuring your first upsell

Once the app is installed, the first page you will see is the Dashboard, offering two options:

  1. Activate upsell - Allows you to activate AI-powered upsell in one click. This highly effective feature recommends relevant products to your customers after they hit the Add to Cart button. Of course, you can always modify the default setup.

  2. Set up manually - Allows you to fully customize your upsells. We will take a closer look at this option in the following steps of this guide.


➡️ Step 2 – Select the offer placement

Starting from the very top, decide what kind of page should trigger the upsell offer. Currently, you can choose from these four options (stay tuned for more!):


Add-to-cart button

Upsell pop-up triggered by the Add-to-cart button click.

Checkout button

Upsell pop-up triggered by the Checkout button click.

Post-purchase page

Appears as a standalone page after the order is placed, but before the Thank you page.

Thank you page

Appears as a pop-up on the Thank you page/Order status page.

➡️ Step 3 – Select product targets

You can target specific collections or products with upsell offers. By default, All Products are selected. With the use of Additional conditions, it is possible to have flexibility when choosing the target products. Detailed information about this feature can be found in the article about Advanced Targeting.


➡️ Step 4 – Select AI mode

Candy Rack allows you to choose from four different upsell types. For smart recommendations, please select "AI mode":

Underneath that you can select how many products the AI mode should recommend to your customers by defining "The number of recommended upsell products".


➡️ Step 6 – Save and activate the offer

Now just click on the Save button at the bottom right part of the page. And that's it, your upsell offer is now live. Congratulations!


➡️ Step 7 – Test the upsell offer in your store

As the last step, we recommend going to your store and testing if the app works as expected.

For example, if you have selected the pop-up with the offer to be triggered on the Add to cart button click, simply go to any product page based on your targeting settings, wait until a page is fully loaded, and click on the Add to Cart button.

Based on the number of upsell offers, your pop-up should look like this:

If you have opted for the placement of the offer on the Thank You page, first complete the order (including payment). Once finished, the pop-up will show on the page confirming the order, and should look like this:
