How to add product badges and descriptions to your upsell offers

Product badges or descriptions help your upsell offers stand out and drive higher conversion rates. Follow these steps to add them to your upsell products.

Badges

Adding a badge to an upsell product

  1. From your Candy Rack dashboard, create a new offer or navigate to the offer you want to edit

  2. Select the product you wish to add a badge to

  3. Click the “Add Badge” button near the product details

  4. In the Badge modal that appears, enter your desired text in the “Label” field
    - For discount badges, you can use the {{amount}} variable to dynamically display the discount amount

  5. Customize the appearance:
    - Choose a background color using the color picker or enter a hex code
    - Select a text color that provides good contrast with your background

  6. Click “Save” to apply your badge and save the changes

Badge best practices

  • Keep it brief: Use short, impactful phrases (e.g., “BESTSELLER”, “NEW”, “10% OFF”)

  • Create urgency: Phrases like “LIMITED TIME” can increase conversion rates

  • Maintain consistency: Use colors that complement your store’s branding

  • Highlight value: Emphasize savings, exclusivity, or popularity

  • Don’t overuse: Apply badges selectively to maintain their impact

Managing translations

If your store operates in multiple languages:

  1. Click “Manage translations” in the Badge modal or in the "More actions" menu at the top of the page

  2. You will be redirected to Shopify's Translate & Adapt app –> Metaobjects, where the translations can be managed

Please note that metaobjects for Candy Rack offers are created after the offer is saved, so the page might need to be refreshed for the translation link to be available.

Descriptions

In addition to promotional badges, you can also add descriptive text to your upsell offers when using manually selected upsell products. These descriptions provide valuable information to your customers.

About descriptions

  • Purpose: Use descriptions to encourage purchases, highlight product benefits, or provide brief product information

  • Availability: Available for all upsell offers with manually selected upsell products

  • Character limit: Up to 200 characters per description

When to use descriptions

Descriptions are particularly effective for:

  • Explaining why the upsell product complements the cart items

  • Highlighting special features or benefits

  • Creating urgency (“Limited time offer!”)

  • Providing sizing, compatibility, or usage information

Best practices

  • Keep descriptions concise and easy to scan

  • Focus on benefits rather than features

  • Use clear, compelling language

  • Avoid excessive punctuation or all caps

See the Managing translations section above explained for the badges feature. Translations for descriptions can be used the same way.

Your descriptions appear directly with the upsell offer, making them an excellent way to provide context and motivation for customers considering your upsell products.
